Visiting the area
All things to doHotels by village
East to west along the valley, then over the Col du Pillon. The Bernese villages speak German; Les Diablerets, Rougemont and Château-d'Oex are in Vaud and speak French.
- Gstaad11 hotelsGstaad is the centre of the Saanenland, built around a car-free Promenade a few minutes from the station on the GoldenPass line between Montreux and Zweisimmen. The Eggli and Wispile gondolas are a short walk from parts of the village, and the bigger hotels run shuttles to them and to the Wasserngrat, since most are not on the slopes. Every hotel guest gets the Gstaad Card from the first night, with free regional trains and buses. Glacier 3000 at Col du Pillon is about 20 minutes by car or 29 minutes on PostBus 180.

- Saanen3 hotelsSaanen sits about 3 km from Gstaad, with a historic village centre and its own station on the GoldenPass line. Hotels here are not on the slopes; several run shuttles from Saanen station, and the Gstaad Card covers trains and buses. PostBus 180 reaches Glacier 3000 in 39 to 44 minutes.

- Schönried2 hotelsSchönried is a village with its own station on the GoldenPass line. A lift runs from the village centre up to the Horneggli, part of the region's largest ski sector, so skiers can start from the village. Cross-country tracks and walking paths leave from the hotel doors. The Gstaad Card makes the train to Gstaad free. Glacier 3000 is about 28 minutes by car, or 42 to 44 minutes by train and bus.

- Saanenmöser1 hotelSaanenmöser is the skiers' village of the Saanenland. The Saanersloch gondola starts beside the station, giving direct access to the largest connected ski area around Gstaad, and the Golfhotel Les Hauts de Gstaad is three minutes' walk from it. Cross-country tracks start in the village. Glacier 3000 is about 31 minutes by car, or 45 to 47 minutes by train to Gstaad and PostBus 180.

- Lauenen1 hotelLauenen is a quiet village in its own side valley, about 10 minutes by car or 15 minutes by PostBus from Gstaad. The far end of the village lies at about 1,252 m, on the edge of the Rohr nature reserve, and Lake Lauenen is about an hour's walk from there. Skiing at home is a small T-bar with three pistes; the main ski areas are in Gstaad. An 8 km cross-country trail runs through the valley. Glacier 3000 is about 27 to 29 minutes by car.

- Gsteig1 hotelGsteig is the last village before the Col du Pillon, gathered around a late-Gothic church. It is the closest Saanenland village to Glacier 3000: the Col du Pillon base station is 7 km away, about 8 minutes by car or 11 minutes on PostBus 180, and the Reusch gondola is on the same road. There is a small village ski lift, and a cross-country trail runs down the valley to Gstaad. The Gstaad ski areas are about 10 minutes away. The Gstaad Card covers the bus.

- Les Diablerets6 hotelsLes Diablerets is a Vaud ski village under the Diablerets massif, at the end of the train line up from Aigle, about 50 minutes away. Chairlifts start around the village, and the Glacier 3000 cable car at Col du Pillon (1,546 m) is about 8 minutes by car, with a free bus for guests holding the Carte Bienvenue. This page also covers Vers-l'Église, a hamlet about 1.5 km down the valley with its own ski tow and station.

- Rougemont2 hotelsRougemont is a Vaud village west of Gstaad on the GoldenPass line, with a Romanesque church. The La Videmanette gondola, part of the Gstaad lift network, leaves from the village. Rougemont is outside the Gstaad holiday region, so guests get the Pass d'Enhaut instead of the Gstaad Card; it covers trains and buses across the Pays-d'Enhaut and the Saanenland. Hotels here are small, and one is two minutes from the station. Glacier 3000 is about 29 minutes by car.

- Château-d'Oex2 hotelsChâteau-d'Oex is the main village of the Pays-d'Enhaut, on the GoldenPass line west of Rougemont, known for its balloon festival each January (23 to 31 January 2027). Guests get the Pass d'Enhaut, which covers local trains and buses, including the bus to Col des Mosses. Glacier 3000 is about 35 minutes by car. This page also covers Rossinière, a quiet village of carved chalets just to the west, home to Balthus' Grand Chalet and without a ski lift.

Which village should I stay in?
Gstaad itself for the shops, restaurants and the car-free Promenade. Schönried and Saanenmöser for skiing from the hotel and the Montreux Oberland Bernois train. Lauenen and Gsteig for quiet and the road to Glacier 3000. Les Diablerets for the glacier and a French-speaking village. Rougemont and Château-d'Oex for smaller, simpler hotels on the Vaud side of the same valley.
How is this guide different from a booking site?
It is a hand-picked guide to the hotels you can book in Gstaad and the villages around it, with photographs of each. Every page says what the hotel is like, who it suits and what the catch is, with a link to the source for every catch. The order of a list is never a ranking.
Does it cost more to book through this site?
No. The price is set by Expedia or by the hotel, never by this site. Links to Expedia carry a tracking code; hotels that are not on Expedia link to their own website with no tracking at all.
When is the ski season?
Many hotels here publish no closing dates at all. Of the seasonal ones that have published winter 2026/27 dates, most open between late November and mid December and close between early March and early April; each hotel page gives its dates once the hotel has published them. On Glacier 3000, the 2026/27 winter pass is valid from 7 November 2026.
